Every year the Institute organises an eminent
personality to deliver the Annual Foundation Lecture of the
Institute.Keeping in tune with its past tradition, AIM organized
a highly informative session of Foundation Lecture on the 13th
of Feb'08 at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture Auditorium,
Uzan bazaar, Guwahati. Dr. Ifzal Ali, Chief Economist, Asian
Development Bank delivered the Lecture on "Inequality and
Prescriptions for Inclusive Growth in Asia". Shri Jatin
Hazarika, IAS(Retd.) presided over the session.
Prof. Ali joined ADB 1984. Prior to ADB, he
was Professor in the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.
Prof. Ali holds a Ph.D. in Economics from John Hopkins University
(1976), and a Master's degree in Economics from Delhi School
of Economics (1970). Prof. Ali's current research interests
include the role of macro and microeconomic policy reforms in
the context of globalization and competitiveness for the developing
countries of Asia.

Dr. Ali shared some of his thoughts
on growth, poverty reduction, the rising income and non-income
inequality and their effects on social and political stability
and the sustainability of growth process of Asia. Dr. Ali stressed
for the need of a new paradigm for growth, a paradigm which would
differ from one country to another. In this regard he added that
the educational institutions in India have a dynamic role to play
in enhancing the growth process and forming a civilized society.
The interactive session, that followed
the lecture saw keen interest from the Asian Development Bank
to be a partner in the development process of Assam and Dr. Ali's
talk in this regard held tremendous significance to those interested
in the growth and development of the region.
Prof. Ali also visited the institute
on 12th February 2008 and interacted with the students and faculty
members of the institute which was highly stimulating for the
participants. He also distributed cheques to the Bharti Scholars
of AIM.

The personalities who have delivered the Annual
Foundation Day in the past includes, Dr. M.B Athreya, famous management
consultant, Prof. Nikhil Barat, doyen of management education
in India, Dr. Jayanta Madhab, renowned economist, Dr. Subir Choudhury,
former Director, Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata and Dr.
C. Rangarajan, His excellency the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and
Ex Governor of RBI, Prof. Rakesh Mohan, Director General of National
Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), an eminent economist
of the country, Prof. J. Saha, Director, IIM Ahmedabad.
