The Assam Institute of Management has been organizing Foundation Lectures in which distinguished personalities are invited to deliver the Lecture. This year Prof. Dipak C. Jain, Sandy & Morton Goldman Professor of Marketing & ex-Dean, Kellogg School of Management, USA, would deliver the Foundation Lecture.

A distinguished teacher and scholar, Prof. Dipak C. Jain has just stepped down as Dean of the Kellogg School of Management, North Western University, USA, after an eight year stint. Dean of Kellogg is one of the most prestigious positions in the field of management education in the world. Prof. Jain is a member of the faculty of the institute since 1987. Earlier, he served as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for five years.

Prof. Jain's areas of research include the marketing of high-tech products; market segmentation and competitive market structure analysis; cross-cultural issues in global product diffusion; new product diffusion; and forecasting models. He has had more than 50 articles published in leading academic journals.

He is also a Visiting Professor to Otto Bescheim Graduate School of Management, WHU Koblenz, Netherlands Business School, Nijenrode University, Sasin Graduate School of Business Administration, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad etc. In 2003, he was appointed as foreign affairs adviser for the Prime Minister of Thailand. He has served as a Consultant to Microsoft, Novartis, American Express, Sony, Nissan, Motorola, Eli Lilly, Phillips and Hyatt International. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Hartmarx Corporation, Deere & Company, Northern Trust Corporation and Reliance Industries (India). He is also a former Director at United Airlines and Peoples Energy. He is also in the Editorial Boards of some of the leading journals in Management.

What always finds a pride of place in Prof. Jain's rich CV is that he is a Graduate of Darrang College, Tezpur and did his post Graduation from Gauhati University in 1978. He never forgets to refer to the numerous awards he won in academic field in Assam prior to his going to Texas University for his MS and PhD in 1983. Although he is one of the most illustrious management educator in the world, Prof. Jain credits his attainments to the rich foundations laid by the Indian education system and the dedicated teachers he had in Tezpur and Guwahati. It is indeed a matter of pride for all of us in Assam that Prof. Jain, after attaining such high accolades in his field abroad, remembers his place of origin so deeply.

Previous Foundation Lectures

Keeping in tune with its past tradition, AIM organized a highly informative session of Foundation Lecture on the 13th of Feb'08 at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture Auditorium, Uzan bazaar, Guwahati. Dr. Ifzal Ali, Chief Economist, Asian Development Bank delivered the Lecture on "Inequality and Prescriptions for Inclusive Growth in Asia". Shri Jatin Hazarika, IAS(Retd.) presided over the session.

Prof. Ali joined ADB 1984. Prior to ADB, he was Professor in the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. Prof. Ali holds a Ph.D. in Economics from John Hopkins University (1976), and a Master's degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics (1970). Prof. Ali's current research interests include the role of macro and microeconomic policy reforms in the context of globalization and competitiveness for the developing countries of Asia.

Dr. Ali shared some of his thoughts on growth, poverty reduction, the rising income and non-income inequality and their effects on social and political stability and the sustainability of growth process of Asia. Dr. Ali stressed for the need of a new paradigm for growth, a paradigm which would differ from one country to another. In this regard he added that the educational institutions in India have a dynamic role to play in enhancing the growth process and forming a civilized society.

The interactive session, that followed the lecture saw keen interest from the Asian Development Bank to be a partner in the development process of Assam and Dr. Ali's talk in this regard held tremendous significance to those interested in the growth and development of the region.

Prof. Ali also visited the institute on 12th February 2008 and interacted with the students and faculty members of the institute which was highly stimulating for the participants. He also distributed cheques to the Bharti Scholars of AIM.
